A little trip to Healesville Sanctuary

[su_tabs][su_tab title=”Nederlands”]

I wrap my home-made lunch when I wake up – like a real Dutchie to the bone. An apple, a banana that seems kind of done (but it’s not, Australian food just … does weird things), a couple of nut bars and finally a bag of sour squirms. I know my roomie, who’s our driver today, loves them to pieces so I bring them with me for her – and okay, for me too. At eight o’clock we’re heading downstairs to the lobby in the MB Building, way too early for these two night owls. A few minutes later our little flock is complete and friend. A is, just as the two of us, wearing a tumbler with freshly made coffee. It’s too early for a Sunday, but it’s probably worth it.

We drive for little less than an hour and park somewhere that seems to be about the right place. But not really, turns out when one of the staff members asks if we’re lost. We’re blaming it on the Google Maps lady who’s been sending us to the wrong side of the fence. Luckily, Healesville Sanctuary has only opened ten minutes ago. We wanted to be early to buy tickets for one of the Magic Moments.

We succeed. We stroll through the park for about three hours and spot all the famous and not-so-famous animals Australia is known for. A. points out that basically every kangaroo looks stoned and my roomie adds that koalas are basically high all the time. Such a great country. We spot wombats, possums, echidnas, roos, wallabies, a cockatoo, a kookaburra (who definitely sounded like he was laughing at me) and a variety of different avid birds in all sorts of colours, forms and shapes. The sun is reflecting my mood today and I end up with a light sunburn on my cheeks. I brought sunscreen, but I am way too occupied with taking pictures of all the beautiful creatures I am surrounded with. The most venomous snakes in the world, hard-to-see lizards and night animals who’s names I have already forgotten.

The koalas were hiding today, but that’s okay. Our grand finale is the Magic Moment with the dingo’s. We pet them, they give us kisses on the cheeks and their autumn-brown coloured eyes look curiously at us. What a majestic wild dogs. So gorgeous.

We leave the sanctuary. During our journey back home we drive through the countryside of the Yarra Valley – hills covered in grass with a gigantic (or it seems) mountain in the distance.

It’s one of my favorite days in Australia.

    • Reply Leonie 22 september 2015 at 12:52

    • Reply Leonie 22 september 2015 at 12:52

Ah, lief!
